My Personal Early Childhood Philosphy

I believe, as early childhood professionals, we need to support an environment that is open to the children’s evolving capabilities. This environment should have the ability to encourage opportunities for future growth and development. The development of each child will be supported through the EYLF learning outcomes where they will encouraged to learn through exploration and discovery. (DEEWR, 2009)

The environment I strive to provide for the children is safe and stimulating, while also providing opportunities to gain knowledge and draw on previous experiences. The environment will promote “independent exploration” while the children “learn through play.” (ACECQA, 2013)

Parents are seen as the driving force behind our program, and their voices need to support each child’s learning, through shared decision making. I aim to work collaboratively with fellow educators, to get the best possible outcomes for the children.

Through these practices, it is essential to commit by ensuring high expectations where the children can aim to achieve success. The programs are the foundation that will build on the child’s knowledge, strengths and ideas. The relationships with the children will be respectful and maintained over a period of time. (ACECQA, 2013)

I will encourage the children to explore, solve problems, communicate and create their ideas through open ended discussions. My program and practice is continually evolving due to the needs, interests and strengths of each child changing.

I believe the cognitive-developmental theory of Piaget has shaped my view in childcare. This theory explores how children “actively construct knowledge” (Berk, 1989) based on how they explore and see the world. As educators, it is our role to provide an environment that is developmentally challenging but still stimulating and fun.
